Cape Town plans new V&A terminal
Dec 23, 2002
Cape Town's successful Victoria & Alfred Waterfront may soon have a new R60 million terminal for cruise ships and Antarctic research and supply vessels, if V&A harbour master Captain Bill Shewell gets his way.
The plan is to utilise a 300m long berth near the 11-storey port operations building. Like other ports Cape Town has a short cruise season - usually between November and May but unlike Durban or Port Elizabeth the port sees plenty of ships that serve the Antarctic and Cape Town makes an ideal base from which to operate.
Several Antarctic bases including Russian, Indian and South African are already being supplied from Cape Town. Recently India and South Africa signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Antarctic Co-operation and the Indian Maitri base situated about 400km east of South Africa's Sanae IV base has for the past four seasons been supplied from Cape Town.
