Lykes Lines makes a flying start to 2003
Feb 10, 2003
Lykes Lines has taken delivery of two new ships, the Lykes Flyer and the Lykes Deliverer.
The Lykes Flyer, built at China Shipbuilding Corporation in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, is a sister ship to the Lykes Ranger which was delivered to the line in June 2002. Both are owned ships, while the Lykes Deliverer is a newbuild on long-term charter.
The new ships are part of Lykes Lines' program of continual investment in capital equipment.
Tony Bruno, senior vice president, said the company had grown substantially over the last few years by adding new services and improving existing ones.
“It’s important that we have the equipment to ensure we maintain the high levels of reliability our customers are used to. The arrival of these two newbuilds will add to the flexibility of our fleet allowing us to match exactly the right ship to the right route.”
The 3,200 TEU Lykes Flyer will begin operations on the Pacific Sprint service, before joining the Lykes Ranger on the U.S. Gulf - East Coast South America service at the end of February. The Lykes Flyer and Lykes Ranger each have four cranes and a shallow draft, making them ideal for serving the ports on our East Coast South American services.
The 4,050 TEU Lykes Deliverer has been deployed on the Pacific Sprint service, Lykes Lines' weekly service between Asia and the U.S. and Mexico.
All the new ships have 400 reefer slots making them particularly suited to carrying the wide range of temperature-controlled cargo shipped on these trades.
The U.S. Gulf - East Coast South America service, operated with six ships over two loops, is a weekly fixed day service, calling at Veracruz, Altamira, Houston, New Orleans, Miami, Port of Spain, Salvador, Rio De Janeiro, Vitória, Santos, Buenos Aires, Rio Grande, Itajai and Puerto Cabello.
The Pacific Sprint calls Yokohama, Kobe, Hong Kong, Kaoshiung, Pusan, Kobe, Yokohama, Los Angeles, Ensenada, Manzanillo, Yokohama.
The Lykes Flyer and Lykes Ranger have been delivered under parent company CP Ships' four-year 0 million ship replacement program which will be completed later this year.
Note: Lykes Lines, based in Tampa, Florida, operates shipping services between ports in the U.S., Mexico, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Canada, North Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa (including South Africa) and Asia. Lykes Lines is a member of the CP Ships group.
