Hello Hamburg Süd, Goodbye Kien Hung
Mar 18, 2003
Taiwanese shipping line Kien Hung, which has ships calling at South African ports, has been sold to Germany’s Hamburg Süd for an undisclosed amount.
Kien Hung, which was owned by the Shih family, is believed to own nine ships in addition to a number of charters and operates services between the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian sub-continent, Africa and South America.
The Kien Hung name is expected to continue is use under the new owners.
At one stage Kien Hung also operated a service from South Africa to Europe for a short period.
The line has been the subject of much speculation in South African shipping circles for several weeks, with various reports about world-be buyers, with CP Ships being named but subsequently emphatically denying any such intention.
