NPA springs a surprise
Jun 18, 2003
The National Ports Authority sprang a surprise during the recent International Association of Ports & Harbours World Ports Conference held in Durban, when they unveiled what had been until then their best kept secret – a 100-passenger harbour cruise launch named Isiponono.
The twin-hulled harbour and deep sea craft was built in Cape Town for a reported figure of R16 million and sailed along the coast to arrive in Durban in time for the World Ports Conference.
The craft bearing the name Isiponono, which means ‘Beautiful Lady’ was quickly pressed into service taking delegates in tours of the harbour.
The corporate vessel replaces the converted pilot boat known as Port of Durban, which it is will be transferred to Richards Bay, from which it originally came.
Isiponono could well become the forerunner of a number of newer modern bay cruise craft seen on Durban Bay as the several waterfront developments progress.
