Mystery Hulk at Matola
Jul 16, 2003
On 18 February we posted a picture of a hulk beached near Matola near Maputo in Mozambique, and asked if anyone could identify it.
A reader from half way across the world has come up with a suggestion. Mr Lars Eliassen, who spent his school holidays on various whalers that operated in and out of Durban harbour in the late sixties, and who later became a merchant seaman during which time he made several voyages to Maputo, writes:
“In regards to this mystery hulk I do recall that there was one of Union Whaling’s catchers that was left on the sand bank many years ago (either No.17 or No.27) and as I recall their propulsion system was triple expansion steam.”
