Viarsa 1 saga comes to an end - ship boarded
Aug 27, 2003
The dramatic 20-day chase across two oceans and among icebergs in the Southern Ocean came to an end today (Wednesday, 27 August 2003) with the boarding of the Uruguayan fishing vessel Viarsa 1 and the arrest of her master and crew.
Security personnel taken to the scene on board the salvage tug John Ross, which left cape Town in secrecy last Friday, went on board today and made the arrest, which the South African Department of Environmental Affairs & Tourism spokesman, Phindile Makwakwa said was achieved with no resistance or violence and the fishing vesselís crew of about 40 giving in quietly.
The fleet of vessel will now head for Cape Town where they can be expected to arrive to something of a heroís welcome in about seven days time. The Viarsa 1 will probably later be sent back to Australia.
