Bid to salvage chokka boat Thane
Dec 3, 2003
A race was on today to salvage the chokka (squid) fishing boat Thane, which beached at Blue Horizon Bay near Port Elizabeth yesterday (Tuesday, 2 November).
According to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) the Smit Salvage service vessel Algoa was on standby to attempt to pull the Thane off the beach.
Despite the rough seas and in total darkness the crew of the fishing vessel all managed to scramble to safety by jumping into the sea, from where lifeguards and members of the Port Elizabeth National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) used rubber inflatable rescue boats to take them on board.
Rescuers were summoned to the scene shortly after midnight on Tuesday by Port Elizabeth port authorities. At the time a strong swell was running preventing rescuers going alongside the stricken vessel.
