Move your cargo or else…

Ghana’s ministry of ports, harbours and railways is getting tough on those who use the ports as a storage facility for uncleared cargo.
The minister, Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi warned importers that the department’s patience was wearing thin over cargo that was left in the harbours for unnecessary long periods.
He said the port of Tema was becoming congested partly as a result of uncleared cargo and appealed to stevedore companies to assist with the clearing of this cargo at Tema and Takoradi. Importers who failed to clear cargo within two weeks timeously faced sanctions, he warned.
The minister also said the process of privatisation at the ports was going ahead and would lead to what he referred to as a liberalisation of services, which existing operators must accept.
