SA Marine head dies
Jul 26, 2004
Stamatis Restis, the Greek shipowner and founder of ship management company and shipowner Enterprises Shipping and Trading, died of a heart attack at his home in Athens this month.
Mr Restis, who was 64, acquired the bulk ship interests of Safmarine (SA Marine Corporation) from Safren in 1999 when the latter company unbundled its shipping activities. The container line section of the company, Safmarine Container Lines was sold to the AP Moller Group with Capital Financing, holding company for Enterprise Shipping buying up the remainder.
Altogether Enterprises Shipping controls a fleet of over 50 ships including dry bulkers, tankers and reefer vessels.
SA Marine has a number of newbuilding bulkers under construction.
Stamatis Restis, who founded Enterprises Shipping in 1974, is believed to have been the preferred bidder to take over Greece’s national airline Olympic Airways. The company is also reported to be a potential bidder for Stelmar Shipping.
