The maritime industry was abuzz today with the news that AP Møller-Maersk and Royal P&O Nedlloyd NV were holding talks aimed at a takeover of the Dutch shipping group by the Danish giant.
In separate statements today both companies acknowledged that talks were being held towards a takeover of the Dutch company. Both companies warned however that there could be no certainty whether these talks would result in an offer being made and said further statements would be made when appropriate.
Shares in Royal P&O Nedlloyd rose appreciably on the Euronext (Amsterdam Stock Exchange) shortly after speculation began to surface.
AP Møller-Maersk ranks as the world’s largest container ship operator and P&O Nedlloyd stands at number four.
Both companies are active in South Africa.
