Third patrol boat ready
May 16, 2005
South Africa’s third new sea fishery patrol boat, to be christened Ruth First, is to be handed over from the Far Ocean Shipyards this Wednesday, 18 May.
The vessel, a sister boat to the Lillian Ngoyi which has already entered service, will be available to go to sea immediately following the christening ceremony in Cape Town’s V&A harbour, where Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, the deputy minister of environmental affairs and tourism will accept the craft.
Lillian Ngoyi and Ruth First plus a third and as yet uncompleted sister vessel are designed for close inshore patrol duty along the Southern African seaboard. A fourth and much larger vessel, Sarah Baartman has also entered service with the department.
