The search for 14 missing trawlermen from the chokka boat (squid) Lindsay was called off earlier today (Sunday afternoon, 8 May 2005) after no trace of the missing men could be found.
The men went reported missing when their trawler sank after being in collision with a reefer vessel which was en route from Singapore to Brazil. The collision took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, just as the trawler Lindsay prepared to drop anchor about 10 miles off Sardinia Bay, which lies a similar distance west of Cape Recife.
A search involving about a dozen craft and coordinated by the NSRI and assisted by air force helicopters failed to find any trace of the men, who must be presumed to have gone down with the boat that sank almost instantly. The only survivors so far rescued are the skipper and one crewman.
