CLIPPER RACE UPDATE – Glasgow joins the party
Sunday 20 November
Glasgow Clipper crossed the finish line at 11.02 GMT (1302 local time) on Saturday 19 December in ninth place to join the eight other boats that are already moored up in the Durban Yacht Mole. The Clipper Race Village is now a hive of activity as the crews get on with dreaded deep cleans and carrying out maintenance after the second Atlantic crossing of the 7 leg race.
Glasgow pulled a great crowd-pleasing finish out of the bag after six days of beating up the South African coast. After a spate of night time arrivals, Durban bucked the trend this morning and Glasgow has pulled out all the stops by arriving on a Saturday afternoon in brilliant sunshine.
Earlier yesterday Durban Clipper crossed the finish line at 06.49 local time (0449 GMT). Dolphins were playing around Durban's bow as they coasted towards the finish line in light winds. Mother Nature tested Craig and his crew right up to the line into their home port, when the wind died right off a couple of miles from the finish. Crowds gathered at the Durban Yacht Mole to welcome home the city's favourite sailor and Durban first ever entrant in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Durban duly arrived at the Yacht Mole at 07.30 local time, and a host of local dignitaries, Zulu warrior dancers and supporters gathered for the much-awaited homecoming of the local yacht.
The only boat still to reach Durban is Jersey Clipper. Mark Taylor and his crew made a pit stop in Cape Town after experiencing problems with their rigging en route from Salvador. When they do arrive next week, they are certain to get the same special welcome that the others have arrived to. This morning, Jersey was 560 miles from Durban.
