BREAKING NEWS – BULKER IN DANGER OF SINKING OFF CAPE COAST
The Greek-owned, Panamanian-registered bulk carrier IOANNIS NK (14,498-gt, built 1977, IMO 7700946) was this afternoon taking on water and in strong danger of sinking approximately 95 nautical miles off Lamberts Bay, northwest of Saldanha Bay.
The bulker, which is owned by Agios Fanourios Shipping and managed by Seabound Maritime of Piraeus is reported to be carrying a cargo of 22,500 tonnes of sugar loaded in Brazil and was bound for India when the crew reported the ingress of water. The Smit Salvage tug Smit Amandla has put to sea and is hurrying to the scene.
The crew of 20 were later evacuated from the ship by helicopter and were safely on shore this evening.
