South African Port Operations has implemented a new access control system at the Durban Container Terminal (DCT) with effect from today (7 May 2007) to enhance ISPS code compliance in line with international best-practice standards.

The system which is a pilot project at DCT will manage access into the terminal by introducing a shuttle service for all terminal users excluding truck drivers.

Pru Archary, SAPO GM: Business Risk, Corporate Governance and Legal said: “The introduction of the new access control system by SAPO, an operating division of Transnet is intended to create a safe environment for all terminal users.

“The new shuttle service will enhance security checks by restricting illegal access to the terminal as all visits will now have to be pre-announced at the security check point where permits will be issued to terminal visitors.”

The pick up and drop off zones at DCT will be clearly signposted for the various terminal users. These will be demarcated into two broad categories i.e. stevedores, customers and other terminal users.

Archary added the shuttle service vehicles will transport terminal users to their various destinations within the terminal and pick them up again at regular intervals.

“SAPO is committed to delivering customer-orientated solutions and we appeal for co-operation and patience as we roll-out the new system.

“The project is aimed at positioning South African ports in line with international best-practice and ensuring that security is non-negotiable and everyone’s business.”
